A hajó etiópokat vitt volna Jemenbe, amely népszerű tranzitországnak számít azok számára, akik a gazdag öböl-menti országokba, például Szaúd-Arábiába akarnak eljutni. Az ENSZ szerint Jemenben polgárháború dúl, mégis tömegesen érkeznek Afrikából a közel-keleti országba.
