1944 őszétől a mai Győr-Moson-Sopron megye a magyar holokauszt kiemelt helyszínévé vált. Az egész országból ide vezényelték a megmaradt munkaszolgálatosokat, Budapestről pedig gyalogmenetben hajtottak tízezreket a Német Birodalom felé, rengetegen haltak meg. Még évtizedekkel később is bukkantak újabb és újabb tömegsírokra.
