A gyűrű az ókor óta a kötelék szimbóluma, de a jegygyűrűnek eredetileg semmi köze nem volt a romantikához, épp ellenkezőleg. A bal oldal ráadásul évszázadokon át elátkozott volt, egy lázadó pap utasítása viszont mindent megváltoztatott.
